Bariatric and Metabolic Weight Loss Center at Stony Brook University

Dr. Aurora D. Pryor is a recognized leader in bariatric surgery.  In 2011, she was appointed Director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Weight Loss Center at Stony Brook University Medical Center in Long Island, New York. Prior to her appointment, Dr. Pryor held several leadership roles in her 16 years at Duke University Medical Center and Durham Regional Hospital.  She helped advance the institutions’ surgery program and developed clinical expertise in numerous areas, in addition to completing over 1100 bariatric surgery cases. Dr. Pryor is an active researcher and is extensively published in peer-reviewed journals.

Pioneer
A true pioneer in surgery, Dr. Pryor is a patent holder for several surgical technologies. She is passionate about the advancement of  laparoscopic bariatric surgery techniques and outcomes and serves as Co-Chair of the Emerging Technologies Committee for the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

Dr. Aurora Pryor is the Director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Weight Loss Center at Stony Brook University Medical Center.  Additionally, she holds leadership roles as the Vice Chairman (Clinical Affairs) of the Department of Surgery, Division Chief of General Surgery, Trauma, Critical Care and Burns and is involved in surgeon education in her role as Professor of Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery.

Dr Pryor has published more than 50 academic articles and abstracts in  peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, she has published two books and has contributed numerous book chapters about various topics in laparoscopic surgery.

Nationally Recognized
Dr. Pryor is a nationally recognized leader in bariatric and minimally invasive surgery. She has directed dozens of courses at national meetings and has given over 100 lectures at conferences all over the country. Dr. Pryor also serves on the  the editorial boards of Surgical Endoscopy and Bariatric Times.

Highly Experienced
With more than 15 years of experience, Dr. Aurora Pryor has completed over 1100 bariatric cases and over 3000 surgical cases. In addition, she teaches advanced surgical techniques to other surgeons. She has trained 25 surgical fellows in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery – surgeons who are now leaders in the field.

Innovative Researcher
A leader in research in her field, Dr. Aurora Pryor has received several research grants and patents. Her current research interest is in advancing laparoscopic weight loss surgery techniques and outcomes, as well as the use of new technology in the training of surgical residents.

Dr. Pryor is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Association for Academic Surgery, Association of Women Surgeons, International Society of Surgery, New York Surgical Society, North Carolina Medical Society, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and the Society of University Surgeons.

Award Winning
Dr. Pryor was selected for inclusion in Guide to America’s Top Surgeons (Consumers’ Research Council of America) and was awarded First Place in the Weck Closure Systems Award for Excellence in Basic Science. Additionally, she has been honored for her research contributions, including the National Research Service Award (1997-1999) and the Association for Academic Surgery Medical Student Research Award in 1995.
