Dr. Adam Smith has extensive experience in bariatric surgery and has devoted the last 7 years to obesity treatment. In 2002, he started performing laparoscopic bariatric surgeries and in 2004 he established a private practice dedicated to the treatment of morbid obesity. As a LAP-BAND patient himself, Dr. Smith has a unique perspective as a surgeon, and can relate to his patients as he has been through some of the same struggles and experiences.

Pioneer
As a pioneer in the field, Dr. Smith was one of the first surgeons in Texas to perform a LAP-BAND surgery and has been performing laparoscopic bariatric surgeries for nearly a decade. In early 2011, Dr. Smith was amongst the first surgeons to adopt the innovative SPIDER minimal access system using micro instruments, making recovery less painful for patients.

Successful Leader
Through Dr. Adam Smith’s leadership, Fort Worth Lap-Band earned the prestigious designation as a Bariatric Center of Excellence from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery in 2009. Additionally, Dr. Smith served in academics from 1994 – 2004 as an Associate Professor at the University of North Texas Health Science Center and is still clinical faculty. He is the current Secretary Treasurer of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons and serves as chairman of the Strategic Planning Committee for the ACOS. Dr. Smith is a fellow of the ASMBS.

Well Published
Dr Smith is a key contributor in the publication of bariatric-related studies and publications. Most recently, his work includes an article about the positive relationship between support group attendance and one year post-operative weight loss in gastric banding patients, as well as a study about the effect of Adjustable Gastric Banding on obesity and weight-loss quality of life.

Nationally Recognized
With Dr. Smith’s extensive experience with the LAP-BAND system, he presented lectures across the globe. He participated as a guest lecturer at the XIV World Congress in Paris in 2009 and the IFSO meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2008. He has been the course director and faculty for multiple Lap-Band and Total Care courses as well as teaching faculty for single incision surgery.

Highly Experienced
Dr. Adam Smith is highly experienced in all weight-loss procedures and has performed nearly 3000 LAP-BAND surgeries. Due to his level of LAP-BAND expertise, he has served as a trainer and proctor for Allergan.

Innovative Researcher
As Principal Investigator in several on-going and completed studies, Dr. Adam Smith has extensive research credits. Currently, his research work include an evaluation of the safety and effectiveness of Allergan’s BioEnterics Intragastric Balloon (BIB) System and a clinical evaulation of the LAP-BAND AP System in severely obese patients, as well as a principal interest in the HERO study.

Dr. Smith is well-established in the field of bariatrics and belongs to several professional societies, including the Council for Advances in Bariatrics, the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, American College of Osteopathic Surgery.

Award Winning
Dr. Adam Smith has been recognized for his superior work in Top Docs Fort Worth Magazine from 2007 through 2011, as well as Texas Super Docs in 2009. He received a presidential citation from the ACOS in 2008 for development of the general surgery curriculum for Osteopathic general surgery training.
