Dr. James Burhop is a pioneer in weight loss surgery. He and his colleagues are one of the first teams of physicians in Wisconsin to develop a minimally invasive bariatric program. He has helped hundreds of patients achieve a slimmer life through bariatric surgery. In addition to his work at his practice, Dr. Burhop is a Clinical Instructor of Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Medical Director of Bariatric Services at Elmbrook Memorial Hospital and Clinical Professor at Marquette University.

Pioneer
Dr. Burhop was one of Wisconsin’s first surgeons to perform laparoscopic bariatric surgery. He has mastered both the LAP-BAND® and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedures using this minimally invasive technique.

Successful Leader
Through the leadership of Dr. Burhop and his colleagues, the Bariatric institute of Wisconsin earned the status as a nationally recognized Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. Additionally, Dr. Burhop holds several leadership positions, including serving as a Clinical Professor and Medical Director.

James Burhop, MD has been published in Surgical Laparoscopy & Endoscopy, Journal of Andrology, and Endocrine Practice. Dr. Burhop’s most recent published work, “Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery can be performed safely in the community setting”, was published in the Wisconsin Medical Journal.

Highly Experienced
Dr. Burhop has been in practice since 1992 and joined Brookfield Surgical Associations (an affiliate of the Bariatric Institute of Wisconsin) in 2000. He has had extensive training in laparoscopic surgical techniques and performs most intra-abdominal operations, including bariatric surgical procedures, laparoscopically.

Innovative Researcher
Dr Burhop has been interested in the advancement of medical research since his days as a medical student. He worked as a Research Assistant at the University of Rochester School of Medicine.

Dr. Burhop is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and member of the American Medical Association American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Society of Laproendoscopic Surgeons, Wisconsin Surgical Society, Milwaukee Academy of Surgery, and Milwaukee Surgical Society.
