LifeShape Advanced Bariatric Center of Florida’s Innovative Bike & Blog Patient Contest to BubbaFest Florida Keys 2012

Dr. Mark A. Fusco, founder of LifeShape Advanced Bariatric Center of Florida, aims to inspire his patients with contests designed to promote enjoyment in exercise. Last year, he sponsored a LifeShape employee/patient, along with a LifeShape patient to participate in BubbaFest 2011. A fun “health-focused” patient contest was held. The opportunity to attend BubbaFest produced a great patient response and a lot of excitement.
“The data is very clear that in order to maintain substantial weight loss, patients must make a substantial long term commitment to having a more active lifestyle. This is true for all types of weight loss including surgical weight loss. We feel that in order to have any prospect of making this long term commitment to increase activity, it is important to find activities that are enjoyable,” states Dr. Fusco.
LifeShape patients interested in entering the contest are asked to submit an example blog of a healthy activity they enjoy and currently partake in; the choices can range from healthy cooking to running to gardening outside. The patient chosen by the LifeShape committee to attend BubbaFest 2012, will blog their journey of biking through the Florida Keys while inspiring others through their participation. Patients are told they do not need to be a “good” writer to participate, nor are they told to be an “experienced” biker. The event is about having fun!
LifeShape employee/patient, Kathy Blair, shares her past experience: “BubbaFest 2011 was a fun, low key and active experience. I had never participated in an event like this one. I do not consider myself to be an outgoing person, and by the end of the experience I met a lot of new people in the friendly atmosphere. Honestly it takes minimal training and biking experience to participate. It is not meant to be an athletic event, but a fun experience on a bicycle. I can’t wait to go again this year!”
