Dr. MM Gazayerli is internationally recognized as a pioneer in bariatric surgery and was the first in the world to perform multiple laparoscopic procedures, including the first laparoscopic ileopublic tract inguinal hernia repair in 1990, and the first successful laparoscopic splenectomy in 1991. He has extensive research experience and is invited to speak at presentations and seminars all over the world.

Pioneer
As a pioneer in bariatrics, Dr. Gazayerli has developed techniques in Laparoscopic surgery for many procedures that were once only done “open” and has performed surgeries on every continent except for Australia. Additionally, Dr. Gazayerli has developed and patented numerous surgical instruments and tools.

An earlier version of this page incorrectly attributed the success of the Detroit Medical Center to Dr Gazayerli. It was Michael H. Wood, MD who was and still is, the person responsible for the Detroit Medical Center and its accreditation with the ASMBS and SRC.

Well Published
Dr. Gazayerli has an extensive history of publications in peer-reviewed journals. His recent work includes “Heartburn and Reflux following LAP-BAND Surgery”, “The Value of a Studfinder in Locating the LAP-BAND Port”, and “a Method for Threading the LAP-BAND Tube”.

Nationally Recognized
Dr. Gazayerli is known both nationally and internationally as an expert in bariatric surgery and laparoscopic surgical techniques. He is invited to speak at lectures and presentations all over the world, including in Mexico, Japan, Egypt, Germany, Tunisia, and Saudi Arabia.

Highly Experienced
Dr. Gazayerli established his practice in 1967, attended his first bariatric courses and American Society of Bariatric Surgeons (ASBS) meetings in 1999, and began performing bariatric surgery in 2000. He has a unique prospective on the LAP-BAND procedure, as a LAP-BAND patient himself, and is able to relate with the experiences and tribulations of his patients.

Professionally Connected
Dr. Gazayerli is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, Fellow of the International College of Surgeons, and was even an honorary member of the Asociacion Mexicana de Cirurgia Laparoscopica.

Award Winning
In recognition of Dr. Gazayerli’s standing among his peers, D Magazine named him one of “The Best Doctors in Detroit 2007” in bariatric surgery. This award was peer-nominated and over 4000 local physicians were polled and asked to vote for the best doctors in a number of disciplines.
