Dr. Val Andrei is one of New Jersey’s most experienced bariatric surgeons, specializing in the laparoscopic gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and Lap-Band procedures. Dr. Andrei is founder of the Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery Program at St. Peter’s University Hospital and previously served as Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. He currently is in private practice and has performed more than 2000 laparoscopic weight loss procedures. In addition to Dr. Andrei’s clinical work, he is committed to serving the community. He sponsors an inner-city youth group, as well as a basketball tournament focused on increasing physical activity in children, while giving them a safe place to socialize.
A pioneer in the field, Dr. Andrei has been focused on helping patients suffering from obesity since he established the Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery Program at St. Peter’s University Hospital in 1999.
After creating the bariatric program at St. Peter’s, Dr. Val Andrei became Chief of Bariatric Surgery Section at Saint Barnabas Medical Center – a position he currently holds – and then Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Additionally, Dr. Andrei has held leadership positions as a Clinical Instructor and is Co-Chair of the Insurance Committee for the ASMBS.
Dr. Andrei has published several academic journal articles and abstracts about various topics in minimally invasive surgery including gastric bypass and emerging laparoscopic techniques. He has also published two book chapters about laparoscopic donor nephrectomy.
Dr. Val Andrei serves as Co-Chair of the Insurance Committee of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). He has been invited to speak throughout the United States, as well as in Mexico and Canada. Additionally, Dr. Andrei has earned the distinction of being a Center of Excellence (COE) surgeon, and has leading his practice to achieving the Center of Excellence designation from ASMBS.
Having performed more than 2000 laparoscopic weight loss procedurs, with particular focus in Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass, Sleeve, and Lap-Band procedures, Dr. Andrei is highly experienced. He has more than 10 years of surgical experience and has completed advanced training in laparoscopic techniques.
Dr. Andrei is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery. He is a member of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and the American Medical Association.
Dr. Andrei has been awarded the Original Scientific Paper of the Year from the Physician’s Alumni Association of NY Methodist Hospital twice, as well as the Best Research Award in Surgery, the Highest Academic Achievement Award in Surgery, and Best Surgical Resident at NY Methodist Hospital. Dr. Andrei has been awarded Top Doctor designations from 2007 – 2010, including being featured in the Guide to American’s Top Surgeons and as a Top Doctor in both NY-Metro and NJ.
