Dr. Vafa Shayani is an award-winning bariatric surgeon, serving as a staff surgeon at several hospitals in the Greater Chicago area, as well as Bariatric Medical Director at Franciscan St. James Health Hospitals and Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital. He has performed over 1000 successful weight loss surgeries and has been performing LAP-BAND procedures for over 10 years.
Pioneer
Dr. Vafa Shayani is a pioneer in gastric banding surgery. He started performing LAP-BAND surgery soon after its FDA approval in 2001, making him one of the first surgeons in the United States to perform this procedure.
Successful Leader
Dr. Shayani’s extensive experience and successful outcomes led to his status as a Proctor for the LAP-BAND. He has been approved by ASMBS as an Individual Surgeon with Bariatric Center of Excellence designation. Additionally, Dr. Shayani held the rank of Associate Professor of Surgery and the Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery Program at Loyola University.

Dr. Vafa Shayani has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and has authored several textbook chapters. One of his recent works, published in the American Journal of Surgery, looked at weight loss results three years post-operatively. Other publication sources include the Journal of Surgical Research and Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
Nationally Recognized
Recognized for his expertise in minimally invasive surgeries, Dr. Shayani is asked to speak at presentations across the country. He has presented his research at several medical and surgical meetings, recently traveling to Costa Rica for the Council for Advancements in Bariatrics and Huntington Beach, California as a Faculty Presenter for the LAP-BAND Total Care Forum.

In addition to his high-volume gastric banding experience, Dr. Shayani utilizes his expertise in minimally invasive surgery to perform many other abdominal operations including hepato-biliary procedures, surgical treatment of gastoresophageal reflux disease and hiatal hernia, as well as repair of all abdominal wall/groin hernias.
Innovative Researcher
Dr. Shayani is an active researcher, currently working as Primary Investigator for two major studies: the Clinical Evaluation of the LAP-BAND AP System in Severely Obese Patients, and Allergan’s BioEnteric Intragastric Balloon (BIB) System as an Adjunct to a Behavioral Modification Program Alone in the Weight Management of Obese Subjects.

Dr. Shayani is a member of several medical societies including American College of Surgeons, American Society for Bariatric Surgeons, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, Midwest Surgical Association, Illinois Association of Bariatric Surgeons, and holds leadership positions in many of these organizations.

Dr. Shayani has been elected to Castle Connolly Medical’s Chicago Metro Area Top Doctors several times. Additionally, he was honored with the Golden Apple Award for Outstanding University-wide Teaching Resident and the Ralph G. DePalma Award for Excellence in Surgical Research.
