Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul is an award-winning and nationally recognized leader in weight loss surgery. He served for 7 years as Head of Division of General Surgery and Surgical Director of bariatric surgery at Scripps Clinic. In 2007, he founded his own practice focusing on bariatric surgery. In addition, Dr. Bhoyrul recently created a charitable foundation to work towards eradicating hunger in his San Diego community.
As co-editor of one of the first textbooks in the field of bariatric surgery, and a highly trained and experienced laparoscopic bariatric surgeon, Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul is nationally recognized as a pioneer. He maintains a strong focus on minimally invasive surgery.
After serving 7 years as Head of General Surgery, Dr. Bhoyrul founded his own practice, specializing in weight loss surgery. Dr. Bhoyrul led his practice to its current status as a prestigious American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.
Sunil Bhoyrul, MD is co-editor of Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery. He is very well published, with his original work featured in journals such as the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, and World Journal of Surgery.
Dr. Sunil Bhoyrul is regularly invited to present his work at national and international meetings. He is well-respected for his work, and is often asked to teach advanced laparoscopic surgical techniques to surgeons across the country and world.
In addition to serving as an Attending Surgeon at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Dr. Sunil Bhorul founded the La Jolla Weight Management Medical Group, now called Olde Del Mar Surgical. Dr. Bhoyrul performs over 450 surgeries each year, many of them advanced bariatric procedures.
With a full time research lab at his clinic, Dr. Bhoyrul is a lead researcher in the field of bariatrics with several published studies. Currently, he is Principal Investigator for a FDA post market prospective 5 year clinical trial evaluating the safety and efficacy of the Realize Band. He is also a principle investigator in the APEX study on the Advanced Platform (AP) Lap-Band, as well as a study of health related and economic data as a result of Gastric Banding.
Dr. Bhoyrul is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, and Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the American College of Surgeons. In addition, he is an active member of Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), Society of Surgeons of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT), and the Pacific Coast Surgical Association.
Dr. Bhoyrul is the recipient of many awards and has been named ‘Best Doctor in America’, in 2005, 2007, and 2010. He was honored with the peer-reviewed ‘Top Doctors in San Diego’ award in 2008. In addition, he was elected to membership of the Pacific Coast Surgical Association, a limited membership academic society.
