Dr. Stephen Burpee is a highly experienced and compassionate weight loss surgeon, who has successfully performed thousands of surgeries in the Tucson, Arizona area. He is board certified and fellowship trained in Minimally Invasive Surgery and has additional advanced training in laparoscopic bariatric surgery. Dr. Burpee’s clinical interests are diseases of the gastroesophageal junction, colorectal disease and the surgical management of morbid obesity.
Pioneer
In 2003, Dr. Burpee joined the Southern Arizona Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery Surgical Weight Loss Program at Northwest Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona. As Co-Owner, he helped develop the Center’s innovative and comprehensive approach to bariatric surgical treatment and care, offering gastric bypass, adjustable gastric band and vertical sleeve gastrectomy.

Through the leadership of Dr. Burpee and his colleagues, the Southern Arizona Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery earned the prestigious status of ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.

With studies published in well-respected journals such as Surgical Endoscopy, Canadian Journal of Surgery, and Journal of Laparoendoscopic & Advanced Surgical techniques, Dr. Burpee is well-published. He has also written several book chapters on laparoscopic, endocrine, and gastrointestinal surgery.

Dr. Stephen Burpee is recognized as an excellent bariatric surgeon and has been invited to participate in presentations and lectures across the United States and Canada. He has presented at several surgical meetings including the Canadian Surgery forums and the European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons.
Highly Experienced
Stephen Burpee, MD is fellowship trained and board certified. He completed his training in advanced laparoscopic surgery at the University of Toronto and also obtained additional training in laparoscopic bariatric surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Burpee has performed thousands of surgeries in the last 9 years.

Dr. Burpee is professionally connected as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, and is also a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, Canadian Medical Association, Ontario Medical Association and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.

Dr. Stephen Burpee was honored for his dedication to his academic career. He was placed on the Dean’s Honors List – Faculty of Medicine during his medical training at the University of Western Ontario. Additionally, he was recipient of the award of excellence in academics & athletics at the University of Western Ontario.
