Dr. Robert Michaelson is a highly respected and skilled weight loss surgeon who has performed over 5000 laparoscopic operations. Additionally, he has trained over 300 surgeons in advanced laparoscopic techniques across the United States and in China. Dr. Michaelson served for over a decade as a Professor of Surgery at University of Illinois College of Medicine prior to relocating to the Pacific Northwest and has earned many honors and awards for his excellence in teaching and surgical skill. He is certified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine.
Dr. Bob Michaelson is a bariatric pioneer. Prior to devoting his practice to helping those suffering from obesity, Dr. Michaelson was on staff at Providence Everett Medical Center, where he is credited with introducing many advanced laparoscopic operations.
Dr. Robert Michaelson has been honored with several awards for his excellent leadership and teaching. He has taught over 50 courses in Minimally Invasive Surgical Techniques, and represented the investigators of Allergan’s Low BMI Study for the FDA.
Dr Michaelson’s academic publications focus on laparoscopic surgical techniques and advancements, and include work on Minimally Invasive cancer management and bioactive prosthetic material for repair of hernia in infected fields.
Known internationally as a leader in weight loss surgery, Dr. Robert Michaelson has traveled as far as China to teach advanced surgical courses in Laparoscopic Colectomy, Laparoscopic Hernia Repair, and Procedure for Prolapse and Hemorrhoids. Recently Dr Michaelson became Board Certified by American Board of Obesity Medicine. This is a new national program that specifically recognizes physicians who specialize in obesity.
Dr. Michaelson is very experienced in bariatric surgery, having performed thousands of operations. Additionally, he has trained hundreds of surgeons in advanced laparoscopic techniques in both the United States and China.
Dr. Michaelson is currently a Primary Investigator of the 5 year APEX (“AP Experience”) LAP-BAND study. Additionally, he is a sub-investigator for the on-going LBMI (“Low Body Mass Index”) LAP-BAND study, as well as the HERO (“Helping Evaluate Reduction in Obesity”) LAP-BAND study, both sponsored by Allergan.
Dr. Bob Michaelson is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, American Medical Association, American Society of Bariatric Surgeons, and the Seattle Surgical Society.
Dr. Michaelson has been recognized for his extensive contributions in bariatric care through several awards and honors. He was awarded the Chairman’s Prize, Department of Surgery and the Outstanding Teaching Award at UCSD Medical Center in 2000, and is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society.
