Dr. Michael Schwartz is a highly skilled bariatric surgeon, practicing in the Minneapolis area. He performed his first weight loss surgery in 1978 and has since completed over 2000 procedures, 1700 laparoscopically. Dr. Schwartz has published dozens of articles, abstracts, and book chapters and belongs to several professional organizations. In addition to his passion for treating obesity, Dr. Schwartz is interested in Medical Technology, especially electronic databases and medical records.
Pioneer
Dr. Schwartz is a pioneer in bariatric surgery, with more than thirty years of experience in the field. In 1999, he performed the first laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in the Midwest. In addition, Dr. Schwartz developed and founded Exemplo Medical – an industry leader in Electronic Health Record systems with highly flexible specialty-specific software for medical professionals.
Successful Leader
In addition to Dr. Schwartz’ practice at Minneapolis Bariatric Surgeons, he has served as a Director of HealthEast Bariatric Care since 2007. He was a Colonel in the United States Army and chief of General Surgery at Kenner Army Hospital. He has held several other leadership positions including Director of Surgical Education, Clinical Professor of Surgery, and served as a Consultant at Minneapolis VA Med Center.
Well Published
Dr Michael Schwartz has published over forty articles, abstracts, or book chapters. His work has been published in well-respected journals in his industry such as Obesity Surgery, Annals of Surgery, and the American Journal of Surgery. Most recently, he wrote a book chapter in “Obesity Surgery Principles and Practice”.
Nationally Recognized
As the first surgeon in his region to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass, Dr. Schwartz is recognized across the nation as a leader in the field of bariatric surgery. He was trained by Dr. John Linner, one of the two surgeons to perform the very first weight loss operation on a human.
Highly Experienced
With over thirty years of experience performing bariatric surgery, Dr. Michael Schwartz is highly experienced. He started the Bariatric Surgery Program at The Minneapolis VA Med center in 1978 and has since performed over 2000 bariatric operations including 1700 laparoscopically. Dr. Schwartz also obtained his PhD in Surgery from the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Schwartz is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, American College of Surgeons, Minnesota Surgical Society, Minneapolis Surgical Society and the Minnesota Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Schwartz’ scholastic honors and achievements include the Alpha Epsilon Pi Pledge Scholarship Award, Alpha Epsilon Upsilon Honorary Scholarship Society, Chemical Rubber Company Physics Achievement Award and the Sigma Pi Sigma Physics Award.
