Pioneer
Marina Kurian, MD has been pioneering techniques that help make minimally invasive obesity surgery safe and effective since shortly after her surgical residency, when she joined a team of physicians at The Mount Sinai Medical Center. She was a principal investigator for the use of the adjustable band to treat morbid obesity and co-investigator on the use of vagus nerve stimulation for the treatment of obesity.

Dr. Marina Kurian holds leadership positions in national surgical societies, as well as Medical Director for the NYU Langone Weight Management Program, and Assistant Professor of Surgery at NYU School of Medicine. She has educated other surgeons in New York City and throughout the country in minimally invasive surgical techniques, and continues to be involved in surgeon education.

Dr. Marina Kurian has authored dozens of articles and book chapters on laparoscopic surgery. She is co-author of “Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies”, a comprehensive, compassionate, and very well reviewed guide to weight loss procedures. Most recently, Dr. Kurian co-authored an article about the impact of Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding on pregnancy, maternal weight, and neonatal health.

She has been featured in several media specials about weight loss surgery, including appearances on the Today Show, Dateline, CBS News, and Fox News. She is currently a host on Doctor Radio Sirius 114 and XM 119. You can listen to her every Wednesday 8-10am when she speaks on a variety of health topics including obesity and weight loss surgery.

Since establishing her practice in New York in 2000, Dr. Kurian has performed more than 3,000 weight loss procedures. She was instrumental in starting the Minimally Invasive weight loss surgery program at Lenox Hill Hospital. Dr. Kurian moved her practice to NYU in June 2007, and continues to provide expert surgical care.

Innovative Researcher
Dr. Marina Kurian has extensive research experience, including serving as a primary investigator in the LAP-BAND Multi-center trial. Her contributions extend well outside the clinical aspects of the industry, including her involvement in getting the national CPT code for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy
