Dr. Laura Machado is a highly-experienced and compassionate Bariatric Surgeon, who has performed over 1500 weight loss procedures in the Sacramento, California area. She is Founder and Medical Director of Sacramento Bariatric Medical Associates, a comprehensive state-of-the-art surgical care program for patients who suffer from morbid obesity. Dr. Machado also serves as a proctor, teaching advanced surgical techniques to other surgeons, and is involved with research to further improve bariatric surgical care.
Her passion for helping patients suffering from morbid obesity led Dr. Laura Machado to form Sacramento Bariatric Medical Associates in 2003, to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art surgical care to her patients. She has appeared on tv, in magazines, and as a presenter at numerous medical conferences.
Serving as the Medical Director of Sacramento Bariatric, Dr. Machado led her team to the prestigious designation of Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. Additionally, Dr. Machado has served as a proctor, instructing other surgeons in advanced surgical techniques.
Dr. Machado has published several academic articles and abstracts about various topics in weight loss surgery. Some of her recent work includes “Measuring weight change prior to bariatric surgery-A methodological problem in observational studies”, and “Get Healthy, Stay Healthy”, which was published in a Sacramento Magazine Interview.
Dr. Machado is recognized as an expert in the field of bariatrics. She participates in professional meetings in the Sacramento area, as well as regional presentations. In addition, she was named by her peers as a “Top Doctor” in 2009.
Dr. Machado has performed over 1500 bariatric surgeries and is the referral center for complex revisional cases. She received advanced laparoscopic Bariatric training at Montefiore Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery in 2003 and performs laparoscopic gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding, and sleeve gastrectomy procedures on a regular basis.
Dr. Machado served as part of the LABS consortium, funded by the National Institute of Health. The LABS (Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery) researchers are experts in bariatric surgery, endocrinology, research, and epidemiology who collaborate to plan and conduct studies to ultimately improve the health and well-being of patients.
Dr. Machado is well-connected with her colleagues. In addition to her participation in the LABS consortium, she is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, as well as an active member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
Dr. Machado was voted as the region’s “Top Doctor” in Bariatric Surgery based on a survey of medical professionals. Additionally, she has earned several academic awards, including the American Heart Association Student Research Fellowship, “Student of the Year” at California State University, and the Upjohn Award from the University of California, San Diego.
