Dr. Helmuth Billy is a highly-experienced LAP-BAND® and laparoscopic gastric bypass surgeon, serving in both Ventura and Santa Barbara County, California. He has been a faculty member at numerous educational events across the country, and teaches surgeon training workshops. He has been a featured speaker at the annual meeting of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and was a contributing author on the recently released SAGES Bariatric Surgery Manual.
As a pioneer in the field, Dr. Billy was instrumental in developing the bariatric surgery centers at Sutter General Hospital and Sutter Roseville Medical Centers. He was also one of the first surgeons specializing in the LAP-BAND® system, receiving training prior to its release by the FDA in 2001.
Dr. Billy is currently Director of Bariatric Surgery at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, California and helped lead it to its status as a recognized Bariatric Center of Excellence. He also serves as a proctor for the LAP-BAND® and realize band systems. Dr. Billy also used his leadership abilities early in his career when he served as a Commander in the US Naval Reserves.
Dr. Helmuth Billy has published dozens of journal articles and abstracts including his most recent contribution “Gastric Erosion Following Adjustable Gastric Band” which was published in the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) Manual.
Dr. Helmuth Billy is known across the country as a leader in weight loss surgery, has been a faculty member at numerous national educational events and surgeon training workshops, and serves on several advisory boards. Additionally, he has been a featured speaker at the annual meeting of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and has taught principles of bariatric surgery internationally in Mexico, Taiwan and India.
In addition to his busy surgical practice, Dr. Billy is actively involved as a teaching faculty member for placement of the LAP-BAND® system and has educated and proctored many surgeons throughout the west.
Dr. Billy is an award-winning researcher and has worked on several well-known studies, such as Allergan’s Bioenterics Intragastric Balloon (BIB) FDA Trial and Allergan’s APEX Study. Most recently, he is involved with a post market study to explore the relationship of maximum tolerable fill pressure and optimal fill pressure in morbidly obese subjects newly implanted with the LAP-BAND® AP System Standard.
Helmuth Billy, MD is well-established in his field and is a member of several professional organizations including the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and the American Society of General Surgeons.
Dr. Billy was awarded both the Lillian Rap Research Fellowship and the Morten Levitt Student Research Award at the University of California Davis. Additionally, he received the WSCI Award for Outstanding Basic Science Research Abstract from the Western Society for Clinical investigation Carmel meeting.
