Dr. David Voellinger is a highly-skilled weight loss surgeon, offering patients in the Southeastern United States the full spectrum of surgery options with cutting-edge minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopic, microlaparoscopic, SILS and robotic surgery. He performs hundreds of gastric band, banded plication, gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch procedures each year. Dr. Voellinger has also mastered revisional procedures, including band over bypass and incisionless surgery. He is an innovative researcher and has published more than 30 articles and abstracts.

Pioneer
As a pioneer in his field, Dr. Voellinger has championed cutting-edge bariatric surgery techniques including single incision surgery, microlaparoscopy, and robotic assisted surgery. His passion for bariatric surgery began early in his medical career during his fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York–one of the nation’s largest bariatric surgery programs.

Successful Leader
In 2005, Dr. David Voellinger established Southeast Bariatrics, North Carolina’s premier multidisciplinary weight management program, comprised of lifestyle management (nutritionist, exercise physiologist and behavioral counselor), metabolic and body composition testing, medical management, and surgical management.

Well Published
Dr. Voellinger has published dozens of studies and abstracts, including his most recent study “Effects of LAP-BAND on weight loss and quality of life in patients with obesity: 2-year results of the APEX trial”, which was published in Postgraduate Medicine. Other publication sources include Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases, Surgical Endoscopy, and Obesity Surgery.

Nationally Recognized
Dr. David Voellinger has been asked to give presentations at meetings across the country. He recently talked about the effects of obesity and weight loss surgery in orthopaedic care at a meeting of the National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses. Dr. Voellinger also teaches courses on laparoscopic surgery and the Lap-Band.

Highly Experienced
With more than 10 years of surgery experience, Dr. Voellinger is recognized as one of the most experienced bariatric surgeons in the Southeast. He performs the full spectrum of weight loss procedures and specializes in minimally invasive techniques. He also performs the incisionless ROSE procedure and has the largest series of  patients in his region.

Innovative Researcher
Dr. Voellinger is involved in several research projects, including APEX (Lap-Band AP EXperience), an on-going, 5 year prospective study and the Lap-Band AP System HERO Trial, which will conclude in 2015. He is currently conducting research about the use of Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding for morbidly obese adolescents, as well as lifestyle management programs for Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band patients.

Award Winning
Dr. Voellinger has received the Presbyterian Hospital Matthews Outstanding Physician Award,  Humanitarian and Outstanding Resident Teacher Awards from the UAB Department of Surgery, Argus Society Best Surgery Resident and the Resident Research Award from the Association for Academic Surgery.
