Dr. David Provost has 20 years of experience in bariatric surgery and has performed hundreds of weight loss surgery procedures including gastric bypass surgery, sleeve gastrectomy, adjustable gastric banding (LAP-BAND®) surgery, and revisional surgeries. He is regarded as one of the most skilled and highly qualified bariatric surgeons in the nation, and has taught bariatric surgery techniques to students and doctors from across the country. He performs his surgeries at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Denton.
Dr. Provost pioneered laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in Texas, first performing the procedure in 1999. Additionally, he has performed the LAP-BAND® procedure since 2001, the year of LAP-BAND® approval by the FDA. Dr. Provost has continued his work as a pioneer and leader by recently travelling to India to lecture bariatric surgeons on surgical technique, and perform multiple bariatric surgeries for them to observe.
Dr. David Provost is a leader in bariatrics – both academically and surgically. He became a Professor in 1995, and has taught bariatric surgery procedures to hundreds of medical students and doctors. Dr. Provost served as the Medical Director for the Surgical Management of Obesity at UT Southwestern Medical Center from 2000-2008, before he founded his private practice, Provost Bariatrics.
Dr. Provost is well-published with dozens of peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, videos and journal entries. Most recently, Dr. Provost submitted for publication a peer-reviewed article on Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding in patients over 65 years of age, as well as an article about low mortality in a high-risk Medicare population undergoing bariatric surgery.
As a nationally recognized weight loss surgeon, Dr. David Provost is featured on the Weight Loss Surgery Channel as an advisor and expert commentator on the surgical treatment of obesity. He also serves as Associate Editor of Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases, and has given more than 100 invited lectures around the country. In addition, Dr. Provost has served as President of the ASMBS Foundation since June 2011.

Dr. Provost is an active member of several professional societies, including the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), where he was on the Executive Council, and Society for American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), where he serves on the Bariatric Liaison Committee.
D Magazine named Dr. Provost one of the best bariatric surgeons in Dallas in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. In addition, he was recognized in “Texas Super Doctors” in Texas Monthly Magazine in 2008.
