Dr. Daniel Cottam is a highly experienced and innovative bariatric surgeon, practicing at the Bariatric Medicine Institute at the Salt Lake Regional Medical Center. He is credited for helping pioneering the sleeve gastrectomy, the gastric imbrications, the bandication, and was the first surgeon to perform a Gastric Bypass Surgery in India, while teaching Indian Surgeons the procedure. He is most proud of his work with cancer and obesity and was the first to propose a mechanism for the high rates of cancer suffered by the morbidly obese.
Pioneer
Dr. Daniel Cottam was instrumental in pioneering the sleeve gastrectomy as a weight loss procedure, the total vertical gastric plication and the banded plication. Additionally, he was one of the first surgeons in the nation to offer revisional endoscopic bariatric surgery and the first person in the mountain west to do single site surgery.
Successful Leader
As a well-respected leader in his field, Dr. Daniel Cottam has taught other physicians how to perform bariatric surgery safely and effectively. He has also served as a professor of surgery at Touro University Medical Center and is currently a trainer for both major manufacturs of surgical products Covidian and Ethicon endosurgery.

Dr. Cottam has published nearly 50 articles and book chapters on obesity surgery. His work has been published in well-respected medical journals, including Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases, Obesity Surgery, and Surgical Endoscopy. He has served as an editor for Obesity Surgery, General Surgery News and Obesity News.

Dr. Cottam has extensive surgical experience and is one of the few bariatric surgeons in the West to perform the single incision laparoscopic gastric lap band and sleeve gastrectomy. He is currently teaching other surgeons how to perform this procedure.

He has been awarded numerous grants for his research from academic societies and industry.
