Leaders in Bariatric Surgery at ASMBS Fall Educational Event

asmbs fallInternational leaders in bariatric surgery, including several Doctors of Weight Loss inaugural experts, gathered this weekend at the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery’s (ASMBS) 2nd annual Fall Educational Event.  Drs. Gregg Jossart, Emma Patterson, Jaime Ponce, and David Provost directed, moderated, and presented at courses covering topics such as managing bariatric complications, coding and reimbursement, bariatric procedures in low BMI patients, and the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy procedure.

The event commenced on Friday, September 23rd.  During a course about new indications for bariatric surgery, Dr. Patterson spoke about metabolic surgery and the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, while Drs. Ponce and Provost participated in a session about bariatric procedures in low BMI patients. Dr. Provost spoke about his experience with Gastric Bypass surgery in low BMI patients and Dr. Ponce covered low BMI patients and the Laparoscopic Gastric Band procedure. Dr. Ponce also participated in a session about billing and coding for bariatric procedures and moderated a course in complex cases and management of complications of gastric bands.

Later in the morning Dr. Patterson participated in a lively debate on which bariatric procedure is best, gastric banding, gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy. The debate was part of the integrated health course on building a quality bariatric surgery program.

Later that afternoon, Dr. Ponce directed a video course about managing difficult bariatric cases. Drs. Jossart, Patterson, and Provost presented videos and served on the expert panels for the course. The panels discussed options for management of complex bariatric cases and management of complications.

On Saturday, September 24th, Dr. Jossart directed a course about the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. The course covered the techniques and outcomes of sleeve gastrectomy including long-term data to support the sleeve gastrectomy as a primary bariatric operation. Dr. Provost directed a course about achieving the prestigious designation of ASMBS Center of Excellence. Additionally, in the afternoon, Dr. Provost spoke about diagnosis and management of gastric bypass leaks and Drs. Patterson and Ponce gave presentations on complications of gastric banding.

The ASMBS Fall Educational Event is an interactive and intimate learning experience, taught by world leaders in bariatric surgery.  It took place in Chicago, Illinois on September 23-24, 2011.
