Congratulations to Dr Jaime Ponce for completing his term as the 27th President of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). Dr Ponce gave his presidential address at Obesity Week – the first scientific meeting bringing together professionals around the world who are dedicated to both medical and surgical treatment of obesity. Highlighting his mentors over the course of his career so far, Dr Ponce began his address by walking through the accomplishments of leaders from Dr Edward Mason to Dr George Fielding.
Since first joining ASMBS, Dr Ponce has seen the membership numbers grow from approximately 500 to over 4,000 professionals. Accomplishments during his term followed the theme of “a new face”. In addition to Obesity Week, the new face of the annual meeting, he highlighted the new mobile app and new website that ASMBS just launched to serve not only members but patients and the healthcare community overall. He also presided over the launch of Connect, the new online magazine of ASMBS. Although ASMBS operates on a national level, the state and local levels of the society are a high priority for Dr Ponce. Throughout his term the state and regional chapters of ASMBS grew in both number and function, to better serve the patients and communities dealing with obesity and the need for treatment. Though growing in number was a priority, growing in quality was an equal priority the past year. The MBSAQIP was finalized and represents the new standard in accreditation for bariatric and metabolic surgery facilities.
Doctors of Weight Loss sincerely congratulates Dr Ponce on his term as President and thanks him for all the hard work he has done to benefit the professionals, patients, and greater healthcare community.
